Equity and Safety for Women in Construction

Welcome to "Equity and Safety for Women in Construction," a vital course addressing the underrepresentation of women in trades and semi-skilled roles within the construction industry, where they currently comprise only one percent of positions. Based on the Victorian Government's 'Building Gender Equality' strategy, this course moves beyond anecdotal accounts to a robust evidence base, exploring why attracting, recruiting, and retaining women in this male-dominated sector remain critical challenges.

This course will equip you with a deep understanding of the systemic issues affecting women's well-being and career progression in construction. We will analyze key findings derived from a comprehensive mixed-methods study, offering insights into both quantitative data and qualitative experiences. You will learn about the psychosocial safety climate, resilience, and the effectiveness of existing support networks, and crucially, explore actionable recommendations for fostering a truly inclusive and equitable industry.

Key learning outcomes include:

• Understanding the historical and current landscape of gender inequality in construction.
• Identifying the primary barriers to women’s retention, including masculine culture, 'spotlighting,' and prevalent harassment.
• Analyzing the critical impact of workplace culture on mental and psychological well-being.
• Exploring the factors contributing to work-family conflict and its disproportionate impact on women.
• Recognizing the high levels of resilience demonstrated by women and their coping strategies.
• Evaluating the effectiveness of existing support structures and identifying significant gaps.
• Developing strategies for promoting psychological safety, civility, and supervisor support.
• Learning about system-wide interventions and stakeholder responsibilities to achieve zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior.

Through this course, we will uncover three inter-related themes that encapsulate the challenges women face: 'Women as Outsiders,' examining exclusion due to masculine culture; 'Consequence-Free Behavior,' highlighting accountability deficits; and a 'Culture of Silence,' detailing the fear of retribution in reporting misconduct. You will gain invaluable knowledge to advocate for and implement meaningful change, contributing to a construction industry where all individuals can thrive, free from harassment and discrimination.
