This course is filled with practical tools and tips for counselors by a certified therapeutic game master.
Games are a wonderful resource for helping counselors improve family connectedness, child social skills, resilience for kids involved in parental divorce, and reducing ADHD symptoms. Research on the proper use of games in therapy is discussed. A 6 step model of how to use games therapeutically is described including a real case example for the application of various types of games. This includes how to pick the right game, some thoughts on how to find games that fit your client's goals and clinical strategies are discussed.
Pro tips and common pitfalls are also reviewed in order to help clinicians with their use of games in the therapy session.

Rachel Hughes is a licensed marriage and family therapist who has been practicing for over ten years in inpatient, outpatient, and community-based settings. She specializes in life transitions, trauma, improving parenting skills, and transitions in caregivers in foster care or adoptions. One of Rachel’s particular passions and areas of expertise is supporting families through medical issues, whichever family member is diagnosed. Rachel enjoys working with all families on improving communication and general functioning, as well as individually with tweens and teenagers to young adults as they transition to adulthood or struggle with a broad range of emotional struggles. Rachel is a strong advocate for collaborating with parents, schools, and medical professionals in the client’s treatment team to improve the continuity of care. She uses a strength-focused and family-centered approach that creates a plan that fits with the family’s needs to help them achieve their goals. Rachel also provides state licensure supervision for mental health professionals, supervision for individuals pursuing a Child Mental Health Specialist certification in the state of Washington, and AAMFT-approved supervision required for professionals pursuing their LMFT.
