Motivational interviewing helps patients overcome ambivalence and make healthier choices, like quitting harmful habits or starting recommended treatments.

This Motivational Interviewing course provides a comprehensive introduction to the core concepts and techniques of this powerful, evidence-based approach to guiding behavior change. The course covers key terms like change talk, ambivalence, and the "righting reflex," exploring why patients may resist change and how to navigate those challenges.
You will learn how motivational interviewing relates to the Transtheoretical Model of Change (stages of change), summarize the benefits of using MI techniques, and recognize ambivalence and resistance. The course will prepare you to implement at least one motivational interviewing tool, including the OARS method (Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening, Summaries).
Module 1 offers an overview of motivational interviewing, exploring its purpose, principles, and application across various healthcare settings. Module 2 builds upon this foundation by demonstrating practical applications through real-life scenarios, focusing on strategies to respond to discord and sustain talk (resistance).
