This course will discuss some practical ways you can teach and practice these skills in your classroom. A final section of the course will provide a sample plan to help you get started.

Self-Regulation is the ability to calm yourself when you are experiencing strong emotions such as anger, fear, anxiety, or even excitement. It also involves energizing your body when you are feeling tired, sad, or ill. Of course, Early Childhood Educators will be familiar with their students experiencing strong emotions. Many self-regulation techniques can be taught to young children.
This course will explore some of these techniques including: deep breathing, Mindfulness, exercise, and the use of media such as music and video. Research about the benefits of each of these techniques will be provided. The course will also discuss some practical ways you can teach and practice these skills in your classroom. A final section of the course will provide a sample plan to help you get started.

Benjamin Farrey-Latz is a special education teacher with Saint Paul Public Schools. He has worked in education since 1996 in private, public, and charter schools as both a general and special education teacher. After working several years at the elementary level, Benjamin completed his master’s degree at the University of Minnesota.
