Toxicology and Poisonings

This course, "Toxicology and Poisonings," provides a comprehensive overview of the principles and practices of toxicology, with a focus on clinical management of poisonings. The course emphasizes practical application of knowledge, equipping students with the skills to assess, manage, and treat patients exposed to various toxins.

Topics included in the lectures and case studies:

• Identify common resources available to clinicians, including poison control centers and Micromedex.
• Conduct thorough patient assessments using a systematic approach to gather complete information about the exposure.
• Recognize and differentiate common toxidromes, including anticholinergic, cholinergic, sedative-hypnotic, serotonergic, sympathomimetic, and hallucinogenic/dissociative.
• Apply methods to prevent absorption and enhance elimination of toxins, including emesis, gastric lavage, whole bowel irrigation, activated charcoal, diuresis, and dialysis.
• Develop effective treatment and monitoring plans for various toxic exposures, including acetaminophen, tricyclic antidepressants, methanol, ethylene glycol, and salicylates.
