Poor mental health is increasingly recognised as one of the most significant occupational risks within the legal profession. High workloads, adversarial environments, client pressures, exposure to trauma, and professional culture all contribute to elevated rates of stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, and psychological distress among lawyers and others working within the legal system.
This course examines mental wellbeing in legal practice from both an ethical and professional responsibility perspective. It explores the individual and systemic factors that contribute to poor mental health in the profession, the ethical obligations practitioners owe to themselves and others, and the difficult questions that arise where mental health intersects with professional competence, regulatory disclosure, and workplace culture. The session also considers how the profession can move toward healthier and more sustainable models of practice.
